Daniel Island

Once home to the Native American Etiwan tribe, in 1670 Daniel Island was inhabited by some of the first English settlers who arrived to establish the port city of Charles Town. In 1947, the Guggenheim family of New York purchased the 4,000 acre tract for use as a cattle ranch and family hunting compound. Upon the passing of Harry Frank Guggenheim, the land was deeded to his foundation.  Here a group of urban planners were tasked with developing a master plan to ensure responsible development.  In 1991, the City of Charleston annexed Daniel Island and in 1995 the island began to be developed as outlined in the master plan.

Once only accessible by water, today the island is accessible via I-526. The town is within a 15 mile radius of the beautiful beaches of the Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, historic Charleston and the Charleston International Airport.  Visitors and residents of the island enjoy miles of pristine walking and biking trails, gorgeous parks, and panoramic waterway views.

Convenient access to a vibrant downtown, upscale shopping and restaurants make the island a self-contained utopia.  Residents are eligible for membership in the private Daniel Island Club where they can enjoy two Tom Fazio and Rees Jones golf courses as well as fine or casual dining, swimming, tennis, or fitness activities.

The island is comprised of nine separate neighborhoods each offering its own park complete with pool, picnic area, sports fields and gardens.  All this is available via a short stroll from your home.  In addition, all residents become members of the neighborhood property owners association which oversees common areas within the island, plans social events and provides important communication regarding town events or issues.

The island is also home to the Family Circle Cup Tennis Center which each April hosts the annual Family Circle Cup, a pioneer event in women’s professional tennis.

Come experience the Daniel Island lifestyle first hand.  You won’t be disappointed.
